Coaching across racial difference can be intimidating and challenging. This course will provide you with the awareness and strategies to embrace your own identity, show up authentically and mindfully meet the needs of your clients.

Why we created this course: We want to support coaches to more fully explore the ways they are showing up with clients to increase honest conversations about race and equity.

Who this course is for: Anyone who coaches or leads teams and who wants to build capacity to create meaningful relationships where learning and growth happen, across lines of racial difference and with racial awareness and sensitivity to the systems and students they serve.

Prerequisites: Ideally you have attended the Essentials of the Art of Coaching or The Core Collection Sampler. If not, at least some knowledge and experience with transformational coaching will be needed to jump in to this more advanced topic. It will also help if you have a basic understanding of unearned privilege and oppression and come to this course with the understanding that “being color-blind”or treating everyone the same is not an antidote to racism, sexism, and other “isms.”

Description: As coaches, we've all struggled to connect with some clients. We've found identity is often a key cause. This course was created to support coaches in being able to show up fully to meet the needs of their clients when coaching across racial different. 

Through this course you'll grow more capable in embracing your own identity while showing up authentically and mindfully for your different clients. You'll grow more curious, open and comfortable talking about identities and how they impact our coaching relationships.

Outcomes
1. Hone your awareness of cultural elements that unconsciously shape our values and biases and use this awareness to gain compassion and understanding for more authentic coaching relationships.

2. Leverage a rigorous understanding of your own racial identity and its relationship to systems of power and your client in coaching conversations.

3. Build knowledge around systemic, racial oppression, white bias, white fragility and the ways in which these systems are upheld in our schools.  

4. Develop fluency with strategies for effectively coaching across lines of difference and racial awareness. 

5. Become more intentional about your way of being in order to build the trust and deeper connection necessary for transformational learning.

About the instructor

Founder & President, Bright Morning Consulting

Elena Aguilar

Elena has trained thousands of educators across the United States and abroad in transformational coaching. She is the author of six highly acclaimed books: The Art of Coaching, (2013) and The Art of Coaching Teams, (2016) Onward: Cultivating Emotional Resilience in Educators (2018) and the Onward Workbook (2018), Coaching for Equity (2020), and the Art of Coaching Workbook (2020). Elena’s expertise derives from twenty five years as a classroom teacher, instructional coach and leadership coach working in diverse school environments. In her role as a consultant, she has partnered with leaders in public and private organizations across the United States and abroad. Elena is also the co-founder of Kenya Big Picture Learning, and she’s on the advisory board of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center. Elena lives in Oakland, California, with her husband, son, and two cats. When she’s not coaching or writing she enjoys traveling abroad, photographing birds, hiking, drinking coffee and reading fiction.
