This learning experience takes place over 2 consecutive days with 4 hours of learning on each day. In total, this workshop is 8 hours of virtual-live learning. 

All virtual-live sessions (except breakouts) will be recorded in the event you cannot make a session or if you would like to rewatch at a later time. Participants have access to content for 30 days after the learning experience.

COURSE MATERIALS

  • Participants must have their own copy of Coaching for Equity.
  • The Art of Coaching Workbook is strongly recommended to complement your learning.
  • The books are NOT included in the course pricing. Participants must acquire the books on their own before the start of the course.

DESCRIPTION

You want your school to be an equitable place of learning. A place where every child gets what they need every day. And yet... 

  • You're worried that isn't currently the case. There are disparities in outcomes, but what those are and what is driving them isn't quite clear to you. 
  • You feel called to take a stand in the face of injustice but unsure of what exactly to do. 
  • Your mind is spinning with terms and acronyms and confusion about what's the "right" thing to say and what you "shouldn't" say.


If you are in the early stages of understanding educational inequities and are eager to learn, this course is for you. 

When we begin to see inequities in schools and organizations, we can feel overwhelmed by their magnitude. This can make us feel like we don't know where to start, or how to start, with addressing them. At the same time, we may feel a surge of emotions, including anger, sadness, guilt, responsibility, and anxiety, and these emotions can also be paralyzing. 

We have all been beginners. Beginners need and deserve a space to be together and learn. We know you want to take action and create schools where every child thrives, and we want to set you on the path to doing so. This is an ideal course for anyone new to coaching or holding an equity lens.  


OUTCOMES

Participants will:

  • Build foundational equity literacy to increase our learning, reinforce what we know, and consider for our organizations
  • Identify and generate actions related to common inequities in organizations 
  • Learn and practice conversations centered on equity using the tools and practices of Transformational Coaching 
  • Boost our courage for working with triggers and having conversations centered on equity

  • Teachers, coaches, and school leaders who crave a non-judgmental learning space to acquire a foundational understanding of racism, white supremacy, and educational equity
  • Coaches who have started seeing educational inequities but are not sure where to begin to interrupt them
  • People who are at earlier stages of their learning about inequity and racism


This course is also for you if:

  • You know that schools and organizations are inequitable places, but you can't precisely put your finger on why
  • You want to have conversations with others where you can ask all the questions that you are embarrassed to ask
  • You have started seeing educational equities but are not sure where to begin to interrupt them
  • You want to learn a few things you can say when you hear someone saying something problematic, things that will help that person reflect on what they are saying.    
  • You want a space to clarify your thoughts and feelings about equity, to anchor in your purpose and vision for yourself as an human being, and to boost your courage. 

CANCELLATION POLICY

  • Refunds requested within 48 hours of registering will be honored minus a $50 cancellation fee.
  • Up to 1 week beforehand, a one-time registration transfer can be made to an alternate participant or another learning experience. There is a $50 processing fee for all transfers.
  • Within one week of the learning experience registrations are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • A missed learning experience is non-refundable and non-transferrable.
  • In the rare event that Bright Morning does not receive enough interest in this offering to host it as scheduled, we will provide an alternate learning pathway for all registrants or honor refunds for those who cannot join the alternate experience.

About the Instructors

Presenter and Community Engagement Specialist

Becky Barstein

Becky Barstein has worked at the intersection of education, technology, and equity for over 10 years. She designs and facilitates professional learning experiences that seek to deepen educators’ understanding of racial equity and stakeholder voice for schools, districts, and departments of education across the country. Becky taught grades K-4 in Houston, TX, while also leading and coaching teams of new and veteran teachers. During this time, she also developed and facilitated school-, district-, and network-wide professional development focused on elementary literacy, dismantling white supremacy culture, and social-emotional learning for both students and adults. In her spare time, you can find Becky exploring the greater NYC area or hanging out with her two cats, (Thomas) Hobbes and (Professor) Lupin.

Presenter In Residence

Nick Cains

Nick is a human catalyst who is passionate about empowering teachers and supporting them to lead the charge in educational equity. He coaches district instructional coaching staff and teacher leaders while supporting Tulsa Public Schools as a Director of Content and Coaching. Nick has had various roles in education, starting as a 2nd grade teacher in Tulsa where his passion for education was ignited. From there he has supported educators while working at multiple national education non-profits. Nick holds a Master’s Degree in Education Administration: Curriculum and Supervision from the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa. He also earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Fine Arts in Theater and a minor in Broadcast Journalism from Southern Methodist University. He currently lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with his fiancé and two adorable cats.
